Amblyopia

Amblyopia (sometimes referred to as 'lazy eye') means "lack of vision when no cause can be observed". However, in the 1960s and 70's the causes were identified as:

  • Occlusion Amblyopia - where the visual information (what is seen through the eye) is severely restricted or blocked, for example by a cataract or drooping eyelid
  • Refractive Amblyopia - where the visual information (what is seen through the eye) is out of focus
  • Strabismic Amblyopia - where the visual information (what is seen through the eye) is misaligned

Our brains have to be programmed to see.

If any of the above conditions, or a mixture of them are present from birth or an early age, the vision fails to fully programme thedeveloping brain that's devoted to vision.

This is what amblyopia is.
