On-Line Stories

The Chetana Charitable Trust have a wonderful resource of free stories for children with visual impairments and who are deaf blind.

Rather than adapt stories made for sighted children, they have created their own stories, specifically for the children using their services, from complete beginner reader through to fluent reader.

There is an option of languages including English.

You can share the story on-line, or print it off, or copy it into an e-book format to use on devices like a kindle, or our e-reader LOOK. You can also download the Android app from Google Play, click here.

The pictures have great audio descriptions and are organised by both reading level and the areas:

  • My life
  • The world around me
  • Feelings and emotions
  • Academics

This means the child can build a great understanding around a single area through different stories.

The 'More Resources' tab (see image below) has additional activities, braille, epub and more. Activity suggestions are also on the back cover of every book if you download and print them.

When it comes to literacy and CVI, the opportunity story time presents can be one of the greatest, to awaken a child's interest and imagination. We share many wonderful accounts on our page Reading To Your Child. If the child is not ready to learn to read, then snuggle-up and let them listen. All children love a story!

These stories from Chetana are a great free resource. Remember to go at the child's pace. Talk about the story. Make sure they have correctly understood what all the different words mean. Just because a child with CVI can read the word, does not mean they correctly know what it is, so check. Also check, have they seen or understood the picture? Talk about it, you will learn from each other about each other's worlds.

Most importantly, enjoy!
